Keep the momentum going!
Attendance is just part of the story. League officials say TV ratings on Fox Soccer Channel, which has WPS rights for another season, have surged along with sponsorship and expansion interest in the wake of the high-profile World Cup.
“We’ll have a minimum of six teams next year,” Atlanta Beat owner and WPS Board of Governors chairman T. Fitz Johnson said. The maximum is likely eight.
… WPS has helped the U.S. national team, with players such as Megan Rapinoe and Becky Sauerbrunn playing their way onto the U.S. roster and other players staying sharp with competitive games.
Looks like owners of Atlanta Beat, Sky Blue, and Philly Independence are confirming that they will be back for the 2012 season. And Boston Breakers and magicJack are in limbo.
Interested to see how the off-season plays out!
Im hoping the possible 8 teams includes some kind of west coast team. *fingers crossed.
What I got from this article was the confirmation of an incoming Collective Bargaining Agreement.
That, combined with the usual craziness of off-season free agency should make things interesting.
Even better? This shouldn’t affect the Flash like, at all. Emma Hayes tweeted that without Marta, only Atlanta spent less than WNY. I mean she said they spent the 5th lowest, but I think we can all guess that Atlanta spent the least money.
Interesting about his hints at two additional franchises. Although he might be trolling. I usually take optimistic statements with a grain of salt in the off-season until things are final. Been burned too many times before.
I just need this too be over. Hopefully the league will come out a winner by have 8 teams. But that seems unlikely. Just hope everyone returns.
